This week’s conversation spends significant time talking about beauty. And as I was editing it, I contemplated my own relationship to vanity, aging, hair, skin, grooming, the wellness industry, and beauty in general.
So before the interview this week I talk about how conversations with my friend Giuliana shaped my perspective on vanity, bodies, and image. She’s been influenced by the late poet, theologian, and philosopher John O’Donohue’s words on beauty. He believes we are all hungry for beauty and seek it everywhere. “No-one would desire not to be beautiful,” he says. “When we experience the Beautiful, there is a sense of homecoming…We feel most alive in the presence of the Beautiful it meets the needs of our soul.”
Our guest this week, Nadine Artemis is known for talking about beauty. As the the author of 3 books, her latest is called: Renegade Beauty and she’s probably most known as the founder of the natural beauty products brand Living Libations. Nadine’s first combined flasks of essential oils to recreate a perfume she liked for a school science fair, and in 1994 she opened North America’s first full concept aromatherapy store, Osmosis in Toronto. During her years of waitressing while in grad school she would make products for her co-workers to try and studied the female body in depth eventually writing her dissertation on the female orgasm and eventually naming a product she concocted for it, "La petite mort" We get into all of this, plus how women's bodies as so much less frequently studied than males. And if she feels extra pressure to sustain beauty and youth being the face of this brand and much more.
