DON'TLETITGETYOUDOWN:SAVALANOLANRETURNS(PART1)
This week I’m so happy to have Savala back on the podcast (you might remember her 2019 episode). She is one of my favorite people to get into a long conversation with—so long that I will be breaking this up into two parts. Savala is also one of the most impressive people I know. She is a writer, teacher, and social justice attorney. She is the Executive Director of the Center for Social Justice at UC Berkeley School of Law and served as a law clerk in the Obama Administration’s Office of White House Counsel, where she focused on constitutional law. Savala's writing about race, gender, bodies and culture has been featured in Time, NPR, Forbes, Bust, The Nation, Detroit Free Press, San Francisco Chronicle, and more.
Savala's new book of essays, Don’t Let It Get You Down, has made a tremendous impact on me, which we discuss at length.
In this part 1 of our conversation, we cover her writing process and dig into the first essay in the book: “Dating White Guys While Me.” Our conversation covers why talking specifically allows us to relate, intermittent reinforcement, aloofness, dating, connection, intimacy, race, feeling on the outside, and so much more…
