Let It Out | guest season 4 episode 92

This podcast has allowed to speak with the people who inspire me most on the internet IRL… well as close to IRL as the internet allows: skype. I spoke to Refinery 29’s senior editor and founder of the popular column The Anti-Diet Project Kelsey Miller. I love that this podcast affords me long, distraction free conversations with inspiring yet very busy people like Kelsey. Today’s episode is one of my favorites, not only because I love Kelsey’s work and personally relate to her story but because of the abundance of helpful tips she shared related to everything from writing and career to body image and self-care. Since this conversation was recorded I’ve gotten to know Kelsey more and she even became my editor when I got to share my story with food and body image on Refinery 29 last fall.  I’m sure you’ll fall in love with Kelsey in this episode if you aren’t already a fan girl of hers and I highly suggest checking out her new memoir Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting and Got A LifeI got an early copy and read it in two days.

Quotes:

“It doesn’t get easier to get rejected, but you have to just learn that it is part of the cycle.”

“Sometimes an affirmation is just reminding yourself of your value system and what you know is true.”

“You’r not alone. You are not broken. And you can do it…. it’s all totally totally possible.”

“It doesn’t matter what my history is and what my body looks like… we’ve all got this narrative, and if we all decide to try to chip away at that narrative and tell a different story about ourselves to ourselves, then that is when the real change happens.”

“Make the decision to act as if you are ok.  Treat yourself with self respect even if you can’t be psyched about yourself.  Treat yourself as if you are somebody that is worthy of your respect, maybe you don’t believe it, but give it a shot, because YOU ARE.”
