"What's your greatest lesson on romantic relationships?" is a question I've asked in most every episode. This week, with the help of a few favorite guests, I attempt to answer it. Featuring: Kristin Hanggi, Cody Cook-Parrott, Robyn Kanner, Rachelle Robinett, Jessica Ciencin Henriquez, Mari Andrew, Jon Marro, Neada Deters, and Yoke Lore. Let me know if you listen : )
It's just me this week with a dispatch that feels more like a voice note to a friend. I centered this around how the so-called "irony epidemic" has shaped the way I work, write, & share my projects in a culture that often resists earnestness. I reflect on the push/pull between sincerity & detachment, the ways we seek validation, & how group chats, community, & connection factor into it all.
This is a conversation between writer Verônika Shülman and myself, at a party for the release of my new zine, Pivot. It was so nice to be in the same room with everyone after being stuck inside for most of the summer with a broken leg—but in that time I had put together this zine, which is about the lessons I learned in the last decade. If you want a copy, below is how you get one!
This week, Simi Botic—author, founder of *Unmeasured*, and my best friend—joins me to talk about PIVOT, a new zine of essays I compiled while being stuck inside this summer. We talk about seeing each other through different phases and the feelings that come from revisiting our old work. PIVOT is one big nod to my 20's, including all the lessons I learned and the experiences that taught me them.
In this episode, I'm a guest on Liz Tran's podcast, Reset. Liz is an author, executive coach & founder of Reset NYC. She not only interviews me but gives me a coaching session on air. Among other things, we speak about the role of emotion in decision making, regret, feeling behind, moves & other transitions, whether everything happens for a reason & the pressure to "keep up with the Jonses".
In this episode I speak with Shari Foos, a marriage & family therapist & the visionary founder of The Narrative Method. We delve into the power of human connection, concepts like the "cult of culture," the transformative impact of uninterrupted sharing, & the art of hosting salons. Shari shares her wisdom on managing overgiving, navigating friendships, sustaining romantic relationships & more.
Megan Tan is an award-winning storyteller and audio producer who has created shows such as Radiotopia's Millennial, Gimlet Media's The Habitat, and her most recent podcast, Snooze. Her episode on WILD about love in the pandemic is my favorite of her recent work. I felt particularly inspired by Megan’s bits of wisdom from her experience and Buddhist faith. I hope you find it uplifting as well.
This week, a conversation with designer Norma Kamali, whose 50-year career is as rich as her designs are iconic. She’s full of wisdom and perspective and gently gives me advice on everything from aging, to dating (she fell in love again ten years ago at 65), to how she views busyness. We get into her thoughts on her evolving industry, upcoming generations, and so much more.
Ellen is the founder and CEO of Hedley & Bennett whose signature ampersand logo can be seen on top chefs around the world. Born and raised in LA to a Mexican mother and English father, she felt a strong connection to Mexico and moved there when she was 18. We talk about treating everyone with care, productivity, time management, and Ellen gives the best dinner party hosting advice I’ve ever heard.
There wasn’t an episode last week because I was and am listening more than talking. I am committed to following, amplifying and supporting Black voices moving forward. This is our 300th episode. Which feels like a big milestone to celebrate, but also an opportunity to reflect and own how I can continue to improve and amplify the voices and work of marginalized people.
I loved this conversation with herbalist, nutritionist, and author Erin Lovell Verinder. Erin and I crossed paths in a completely kismet way a few years back, and when I was traveling in Australia Erin invited me to stay in their quiet country house. In this episode, Erin is candid about her health path, plant medicine, allowing space for integration, surrendering to the unknown and more.
This episode is a little different, because it’s more of a conversation between friends than an interview. Karolina is one of my best friends, and she’s such a smart, wise, fascinating person. We have a good thing going with our nightly phone calls and I hope eavesdropping on us helps you feel a little less alone, entertains you, or inspires you to call your friends.
Today’s guest Gabriella is unlike anyone I’ve met, in the best way. She is a healer, teacher, performer, actress, and a new friend. We talk about the dark feminine and merging light and dark, embracing ugliness, deep self work, being too much and not enough, healing, feeling instead of thinking, moving and big transitions, her fascinating life story, and more.
Whenever I’m feeling off I try to pay attention, connect with people in person, and slow down. The internet--at its best it can entertain you, teach you, or remind you of something you already knew but in low moments forget. It can also be an overwhelming ocean of options so here are a few links I like...
Terces has lived so many lives, cultivated so much wisdom from all she's experienced, and created many things, including Cafe Gratitude, Gracias Madre, Be Love Farm, and a family and life I admire. She is wise, brilliant, nurturing, and a wonderful host. We talk about farming, romantic relationships, eating disorders, recovery, family, change, hosting, honesty, living in community, and much more.
This morning celebration will include breakfast and coffee by baba cool brooklyn and a guided conversation reflecting on the year in content on LET IT OUT featuring past podcast guests including human design reader Erin Claire Jones, writer Cat Lantiga, astrologer Emmalea Russo and many more. Come ground into who you are before you head into time with family, traveling, and the bustle of the season.
Jacob is the creator or the literary magazine: one word which is a collection of works from notable creative writers—about their personal interpretation of one word. We met through his mom (one of my favorite writers) Dani Shapiro. We get into the in between space of making art and living life, touch on anxiety, talk about differences generationally, and he recommends a bunch of art.
Today's guest is the artist of one of what I like to call my 'security blanket songs'. Adrian Galvin who goes by the band name Yoke Lore is a pop folk musician with a new album out and currently touring. He’s also very smart and articulate and just and an interesting guy. We covered relationships, creativity, routines and habits, and he gave a lot of great suggestions for art.
The parts of ourselves that make us feel isolated, embarrassed and less adequate -- but when we share them we can actually connect.
The internet is great but we really prefer letting it out in person. Join us for the official launch party for Let It Outtt - a space where you can come to read, listen, and learn from others. Come join us for an evening of connection, Soft Story Karaoke, dancing and more!
